Bath Maine

About Bath, Maine

Welcome to The City of Ships!

Thorne Head Preserve

Nestled along the sparkling Kennebec River, our small jewel of a city has the perfect mix of old seafaring history, vibrant daily life, and a strong sense of community. Bath was listed as one of the “Best Small Cities in America” and was deemed a “Distinctive Destination” by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Shipyards once lined the river’s edge and Bath-built vessels sailed the seas of the world. Our recorded maritime history began 400 years ago when the first ship built by settlers in the New World, the Virginia, was launched just 12 miles downriver from Bath. Bath has sailed into the present bringing a taste of her history with her and is now home of the world-class shipbuilders at Bath Iron Works. At the south end of the city, the nationally acclaimed Maine Maritime Museum offers a variety of exhibits on our state’s nautical history.
